The 14th ASEAN Summit marks a new chapter for ASEAN following the entry into force of the ASEAN Charter last December. Under the theme ‘ASEAN Charter for ASEAN Peoples’, the 14th ASEAN Summit underlines new era of ASEAN with people at the heart of cooperation. Besides, there are three subthemes, namely ‘Towards More Effective Community-Building’, ‘Enhancing Regional Resilience against Global Threats’, and ‘Reinforcing ASEAN Centrality in the Evolving Regional Architecture’.
Professor Zhai Kun, Deputy Director of Institute of Asian and African Studies of China Institutes of Contemporary International Relations (CICIR), will provide a post analysis on the recent 14th ASEAN summit.
Kun Zhai is Deputy Director of Institute of Asian and African Studies of China Institutes of Contemporary International Relations (CICIR). CICIR is one of the leading think tanks on international relations in China. Kun Zhai is a young, influential and important think tank expert in China. He was born in Shandong Province, and got his B.A. and M.A. from the University of International Relations. He is a PH.D candidate at CICIR.
His research focuses on Southeast Asia, regional cooperation and security studies. His policy research reports have influenced China-ASEAN Eminent Persons Group Report, China’s Policy towards ASEAN and East Asia Cooperation for Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China, etc. Right now, he is working on Pan- Beibu Gulf Sub-regional Economic Cooperation as a member of Transnational Expert Panel between China and ASEAN.
He has written and published extensively. He co-authored or contributed chapters to Panorama of China- ASEAN FTA and several other books. He has published many articles on Contemporary International Relations and other leading journals in China. His commentaries have appeared in China Daily, People’s Daily and so on. He is also a columnist for World Affairs (Chinese), commentator for CCTV, and an advisor for several CCTV channels (both Chinese and English). He has been interviewed by many major media over the world, including CCTV, Xinhua News Agency, BBC, TIME, New York Times, Economist, Financial Times, etc.
Kun Zhai has visited more than 20 countries, including most of the ASEAN countries. He attended and organized “China-ASEAN ISIS Strategic Dialogue”. Kun Zhai attended “China-India Strategic Dialogue” initiated by MM Lee Kuan Yew. He attended the “China-Singapore Dialogue” organized by Chinese People’s Institute of Foreign Affairs and Singapore think tanks twice. Kun Zhai has given public lectures or presented papers in China National Library, China Defense University, Peking University, Tsinghua University, John Hopkins University, Australia National University, Singapore National University, etc.
