Economic integration within Asia is rising in importance, especially in light of the slowdown in Europe and continuing uncertainty elsewhere in the world. ASEAN stands to be the centre of a new regional trade network, but it needs collaboration with partners to fully realise this potential. As a key regional trade and finance hub, Hong Kong will become a pivot point linking South-east Asia to North-east Asia.
This study by Dr. Suthad Setboonsarng, Senior Advisor, BowerGroupAsia and Dr. Hank Lim, Senior Research Fellow, Singapore Institute of International Affairs aims to consider relations between ASEAN and Hong Kong in the broader context of Asia, to arrive at policy-relevant recommendations for both sides. Is Hong Kong drawing closer to ASEAN, or are the two moving further apart? Are Hong Kong and ASEAN acting as collaborators, or treating each other as potential competitors? How can relations be strengthened?
