LAOS: UK and Laos make extradition deal for arrested pregnant Briton

Updated On: May 18, 2009

Samantha Orobator (21) of south London, has been held in jail since August 2008 after she was allegedly caught with 1.5lb of heroin at Laos' Wattay airport.

After many months of legal and political wrangling, and amid controversy that Orobator might have been raped in prison, a prisoner transfer agreement has been signed between the UK and Laos, allowing for Orobator to be extradited to the UK, to serve out the remainder of her sentence there.

However, the agreement still had to be ratified by Britain's Parliament before it can take effect. The final decision about whether to hand Orobator back to Britain would be up to Laotian authorities.
