Malaysia on Gaza

Updated On: Feb 02, 2009

Umno under the chairmanship of Datuk Abdul Azeez Abdul Rahim and joined by several doctors plans to send a humanitarian mission to Gaza in an effort to provide moral and medical support to the people of Palestine.

The Putera Umno group had previously assisted victims of the earthquake in Jogjakarta, Indonesia, the tsunami in Sri Lanka and earthquake in Pakistan. The group hopes that the experience of this mission can be an inspiration to the young Malaysian generation.

The departure ceremony was simple and witnessed by Bernama's Deputy Chief-Editor Zulkefli Salleh, Abdul Azeez, who is also chairman of the Umno Youth Social Welfare Secretariat.

Gaza is back in the news again after the ceasefire because of Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s spat with Israel’s leader on 31 Jan 2009 Saturday at the World Economic Forum in Davos. The Turkish premier walked out of the forum on Thursday 29 Jan 2009

The Turkish leader’s stance was immediately supported by Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. Iran is a supporter of the Hamas movement which is in power in the Gaza Strip and does not recognise Israel.

Students demonstrated outside the Turkish embassy in Tehran, expressing their support for Turkey’s public spat.

Other Iranian leaders expressing their support included former president Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani and Ahmad Janati, who heads the powerful Guardians Council in Iran.
