Updated On: Jan 07, 2009

Indonesia’s powerful anti-corruption court found a lawmaker guilty of
bribery and extortion yesterday, and sentenced him to eight years in
prison.

Mr Al Amin Nasution, an MP from the Islamic United Development Party
received more than US$200,000 ($294,000) from the local authorities in
return for helping push through the development of tropical forests on
an island off Sumatra. Mr Nasution had received 325 million rupiah and
US$211,984 for the land deal in Bintan. The case is the latest under
the anti-corruption drive by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, who
promised to stamp out corruption when he was elected in 2004.
