Indonesian MP Guilty of Corruption

Indonesia’s powerful anti-corruption court found a lawmaker guilty of
bribery and extortion yesterday, and sentenced him to eight years in

Mr Al Amin Nasution, an MP from the Islamic United Development Party
received more than US$200,000 ($294,000) from the local authorities in
return for helping push through the development of tropical forests on
an island off Sumatra. Mr Nasution had received 325 million rupiah and
US$211,984 for the land deal in Bintan. The case is the latest under
the anti-corruption drive by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, who
promised to stamp out corruption when he was elected in 2004.
