Malaysia: Anwar accuses BN of "dirty tricks"

Updated On: Aug 18, 2008

On Friday 15 Aug 08, the eve of nomination day, Mr Saiful Bukhari Azlan, the former aide who accused opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim of sodomy, swore on the Koran that he was telling the truth about his sodomy, and challenged Anwar to do the same.

In response to this, Anwar Ibrahim has made an accusation that the ruling party, Barisan Nasional (BN) was using "dirty tricks", now that the political campaigning has begun. "It is corrupt and immoral to use religion and the Koran," Anwar said on Sunday. The ruling coalition had also apparently sent SMS text messages to Malay villagers slamming Anwar as an "agent of the Chinese."

Anwar is contesting the parliamentary seat at Permatang Pauh, recently vacated by his wife, Wan Azizah Wan Ismail. The by-election will take place on Aug 26.
