Malaysian PM Abdullah Badawi announced Thursday 10 July that he will hand over the reigns of the government's leadership to DPM Najib Tun Razak in mid 2010.
He said he would also hand over his chairmanship of Barisan Nasional to and confirmed that he would not lead UMNO and the ruling Barisan Nasional coalition in the next general election.
PM Badawi has been under pressure to go after the March General Elections when the opposition enjoyed record gains. Some had expected a quicker handover to DPM Naib, whose father had also been PM. However, in past weeks, rumours linking the DPM to a murdered Mongolian model have resurfaced, despite his denials.
