Political Contest Starts to Boil

Updated On: Jun 02, 2008

Signs are that political contestation is beginning in Bangkok again after a period of quiet following the elections victory of the pro-Thaksin Peoples’ Power Party. Rumors persist of a second coup by the military, mentioned by no less than Prime Minister Samak himself. Groups like the People’s Alliance for Democracy and the so called Dharma Army have again come out to protest in the streets and met with opposition from pro-government crowds. Investigations by the Assets Scrutiny Committee accelerate on Thaksin’s 76Bn Baht benefits from the sale of Shin Corp. Minister Jakrapob, a Thaksin loyalist, is being charged with disloyalty to the King, potentially a criminal offence, for remarks he made in a speech at the Foreign Correspondents Club.
