Thai-Cambodia tensions continue; eight dead

Updated On: Apr 25, 2011

Thai-Cambodia border tensions remain high as another fight over the ownership of two ancient temples, Ta Kwai and Ta Muen Thom, occurred on Monday, the fourth in as many consecutive days. Military officials report that at least five Thai and three Cambodian soldiers have been killed in the violence.
This dispute continues a longstanding feud between the two countries over the ownership of 11th-century Preah Vihear temple, which is located in Cambodia, but is most accessible from its Thai side.
ASEAN has stepped in to mediate the conflict, with a meeting of members' foreign ministers on 22 Feb this year. Indonesia, ASEAN's chair, agreed to send 40 Indonesian military and civillian observers to the Thai-Cambodian border to enforce the unofficial cease-fire.
