Myanmar’s leader for almost two decades, Than Shwe, has retired as head of the military and handed power to a nominally civilian government.

The State Peace and Development Council junta has been disbanded, although analysts believe the army hierarchy still retains a firm grip on power and has a significant role behind the scenes.

Than Shwe’s ally Thein Sein was sworn in as president of Myanmar last week- Thein Sein is one of a group of generals who left the military and are now civilian members of parliament.
