Japan: Russian military buildup near islands "very deplorable"

Updated On: Mar 03, 2011

Japan has said that Russian plans to deploy anti-ship cruise missiles on disputed islands is "very deplorable", during a strategic dialogue between the two countries this Wednesday.

The Kuril Islands were seized by Soviet troops after World War II and the dispute has prevented the two sides from signing a peace treaty.

Russia said that the buildup, announced over its Interfax news agency on Tuesday, was aimed at "reducing the military manpower through modernisation of weaponry".
