Cambodia has asked for regional observers to help impose a ceasefire on the disputed area of Preah Vihear, after the UN denied a request for peacekeepers earlier this month.
The 900 year old row had erupted into armed skirmishes earlier this month, with at least 10 casualties. Cambodia had previously bypassed ASEAN in favor of dealing directly with the United Nations. Thailand is wary of internationalizing the issue.
The UN Security Council endorsed mediation efforts by Indonesia, the current ASEAN chair.
