US Defence Secretary Robert Gates will meet with Chinese President Hu Jintao on a week long trip that includes stops in Tokyo and Seoul.
Gates is expected to push for greater transparency from Chinese leaders about the state and intent of
the country’s secretive military and for more stable ties between the
world’s military superpower and a rapidly rising one. He is also expected to urge China to put more pressure on its ally North Korea.
In Seoul, Gates will meet leaders for talks about averting war with the North. In Japan, which is alarmed by Chinese military moves, Gates and his counterparts will discuss joint technological cooperation and deepening the alliance.
