Chinese public buses for California

Updated On: Dec 17, 2010

Chinese electric car company BYD announced Thursday it plans to supply the State of California with electric buses for public projects, reports the Financial Times today.

There are however pressing concerns that the technologies China wants to bring over are legal. For example, BYD's electric vehicle technology is powered by a "generally still-unproven" advanced lithium-ion battery.

Similar difficulties may arise for example with American plans to get Chinese help to build a high-speed railway. Foreign companies such as Germany's Siemens and Japan's Kawasaki Heavy Industries Ltd. had licensed their technology to China with the understanding that it be used only within China.
