In an unusual public statement, the American Embassy to China's deputy chief of mission Mr Robert Goldberg asked for the immediate release of an American geologist convicted of a state secrets charge. Mr Goldberg read his statement outside the Beijing court which was hearing geologist Xue Feng's appeal.
When Mr Xue was arrested, he was working for an American energy and engineering consulting firm called IHS Inc. Xue and IHS have argued that they believed the controversy-causing database was a commercially available product that was classified as a state secret only after Xue had purchased it.
