US willing to help craft legally binding South China Sea code

Updated On: Oct 05, 2010

To help end territorial disputes between China and ASEAN, the US has offered to help craft a legally binding code of conduct for the South China Sea.

US ambassador to the Philippines Harry Thomas made the statements, saying that the US had an interest in seeing the dispute settled peacefully.

However, he stressed that the US will have to wait for China and ASEAN to sit down and craft a code of conduct between themselves, before adding input.

China has so far rejected any form of interference from the US on the issue, and maintains that it wishes to solve territorial disputes bilaterally.
