Myanmar Junta Chief Still In Charge

Updated On: Sep 02, 2010

The Myanmar media has confirmed that junta chief Than Shwe remains in power, dispelling reports that he had stepped down from the army as part of a major reshuffle in advance of November's upcoming elections.

Under Myanmar's new constitution, 25% of seats in Parliament will go to military representatives.

The polls will take place without Myanmar's main opposition party, the National League for Democracy, which is boycotting the elections as unfair.
