China Plants Flag Beneath South China Sea

Updated On: Aug 27, 2010

China's state media reported on Thursday that a deep-water submersible had planted a Chinese flag 12,333 feet deep in the South China Sea.

The event was reported by CCTV more in the context it being a technological achievement for China's China's submersible navy. But the overtones of sovereignty are marked.

The sovereignty of various parts of the 648,000-square-mile sea is disputed by China, Taiwan, Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines and Vietnam.

No country had an immediate comment on the Chinese flag planting.
