Disaster relief is expected to feature prominently on the agenda of this year's ASEAN Regional Forum, to be held Friday in Hanoi. Foreign ministers from the ARF's 27 member grouping will meet to discuss regional security issues.
The grouping is likely to call for more harmonization and coordination of relief efforts in the region, which is prone to earthquakes, storms, and volcanic eruptions and is expected to be affected by rising sea levels and extreme weather caused by climate change.
It remains to be seen whether issues such as tensions on the Korean Peninsula will feature highly on the agenda, as such issues are more complicated and do not necessarily involve all parties that the ARF brings to the table.
