Vietnam: China releases fishermen

Updated On: Aug 13, 2009

China has released a Vietnamese fishing boat and its 13 crew members detained in disputed waters around the Paracel archipelago, Vietnam said on Wednesday.

Foreign ministry spokesman Le Dung stated that The fishermen "are expected to return in the next few days", after their detention by the Chinese navy on August 1.

China still holds 12 other Vietnamese sailors who were detained in mid-June. They were fishing in the same area.

Vietnam and China have a long-standing dispute over ownership of the Paracels and another archipelago, the Spratleys, which has potentially vast oil and gas reserves and rich fishing grounds.
