Stamford Land head praised for boosting ties between Australia and S'pore
Bowing his head slightly, Ow Chio Kiat stood in silence as visiting Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard placed a shiny blue medallion around his neck.
For the 67-year-old executive chairman of Sydney- based Stamford Land Group, it was another proud moment in his distinguished career as he became the first person from Singapore's private sector to be appointed Honorary Officer in the General Division of the Order of Australia.
The rare tribute - one of Australia's most prestigious honours - puts the prominent hotelier and developer in illustrious company. Previous recipients from Singapore include Emeritus Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong and former police commissioner Khoo Boon Hui.
Ms Gillard - who is on her first official visit to Singapore as Australia's first female prime minister - said the award was given to Mr Ow for his service "to the development of commercial relations and identifying business opportunities between Australia and Singapore".
