NTU confers honorary doctorate on S R Nathan
Former President S R Nathan has been conferred an honorary doctorate by Nanyang Technological University (NTU), in recognition of his distinguished achievements and contributions to the university and to the Republic.
Mr Nathan was instrumental as founding director in establishing the Institute of Defence and Strategic Studies, now known as the S Rajaratnam School of International Studies. He was also the Chancellor of NTU for 12 years.
Before the ceremony yesterday, Mr Nathan told reporters that he is "deeply touched" by the gesture as he was not an academic. "I don't think I'm deserving of it because I haven't spent much time in the university as an academic," he added.
When he was asked to set up the Institute of Defence and Strategic Studies, Mr Nathan said NTU allowed him to develop the institute in the way he wanted. As NTU's Chancellor, Mr Nathan also oversee the development of the university and its new programmes.
"They sought my opinion, I gave it to them. It was a layman's opinion, so from that point of view, well, I'll say that I'm very touched," he added.
Also present at Tuesday's ceremony were President Tony Tan and Education Minister Heng Swee Keat.
