"The democratically-elected government can easily lose support unless it can respond effectively to the human tragedy. In the past, this might have meant a swing to the military. But now, support for the Taliban may rise and a Islamist influenced government is possible. If so, then the situation in Afghanistan will become even more complicated and the fate of Pakistan – a populous Muslim country with nuclear weapons – more in question."
