SIIA Chairman Simon Tay commented on the possible ramifications of the Silviu Ionescu case:
Associate Professor Simon Tay, chairman, Singapore Institute of International Affairs, said: "I think the statement is important to remind the Romanians that this is not just a government to government issue. This is a people-to-people issue. I think that our attitude should be one of trying to foster co-operation.
“Quite honestly, Singapore is a small country and while economically quite rich, there aren't that many sanctions or sticks that we can really try to hit Romania with."
