SIIA Chairman Simon Tay was interviewed by ABC Radio Australia about the recent maritime disputes in Asia.
"I think it is a matter of concern, particularly right now there is a sense of distrust or fracture going on in Asia," he said. "The whole issue is simply the marking of the anniversary, the end of the Pacific War really means very different things for the Japanese, as opposed to the Chinese and the Koreans. But additionally, I think there's a sense that Chinese nationalism is growing stronger and stronger, and I'm concerned also because in South-east Asia, earlier in July, we had similar nationalism and conflicting claims between China and South-east Asian nations."
The full interview aired on 24 August 2012, and is available online under the title "China motives questioned in maritime disputes".
