Australia's leaders have heard from senior foreign policy advisers from Australia and the Asian region on the country's relations towards Asia and the United States, including SIIA Chairman Simon Tay.
By the end of the year Australia is expected to release a new White Paper charting its course amidst the rise of Asia. In light of this, Mr. Tay was in Australia last week at the invitation of the Australian Institute of International Affairs for a series of events on Australia in the Asian Century.
Commenting on the dilemma faced by Australia over the rise of China, Mr. Tay told a public forum at the New South Wales Parliament that all countries had to be wary of "monogamous" alliances, and more carefully weigh them against national interest.
"The choice for Australia is to either work alone, or rather raft together with other smaller and middle-sized countries to find some combinations and exchange some notes about what to do about some of the fundamentals and about countries that are certainly much bigger than Singapore or Australia," he said.
The forum was covered by the Sydney Morning Herald on 25 August 2012, in an article entitled "Call for new approach to Asia relations".
