The SIIA played a leading role in dialogues with Taiwan think tanks. It coordinated and participated in the 10th dialogue on 5-7 Sept, between the ASEAN Institutes of Strategic and International Studies and Taiwanese think tanks, held in Cebu and hosted by the ISDS of the Philippines. Cooperation with the Institute of International Relations of National Cheng Chi University is coordinated by SIIA Research Director, Dr Hank Lim. Other participants were Lim Tai Wei, Fellow at the East Asia Insitute, and SIIA Chairman Simon Tay.
Issues discussed included the changing politics in Taiwan and cross strait relations, and regional cooperation on economic issues, the environment and security. Participants felt that with President Ma coming into office in Taipei, cross straits relations have stabilized and this may allow for more relations between Taiwan and other countries, especially in the economic field.
Immediately before the ASEAN dialogue, the SIIA also hosted a closed door bilateral discussion in Singapore with a smaller delegation of Taiwanese. The ASEAN-Taiwan dialogue was initiated by the SIIA in 1998 and has evolved as a premier dialogue between Taiwan and the region.
