Simon Tay called on Japan to help lead ASEAN and Asia in energy efficiency so that the region could pursue economic growth while minimizing the impact on the environment and climate change. He made this call at the ASEAN-Japan Media Forum, held in Bangkok on 31 Mar to 1 Apr, which was attended by a strong Japanese delegation, including two Vice-Ministers. Taypraised Japanese energy efficiency as a world leader, and called on it to share expertise with ASEAN and East Asia, as the economies come closer together. He cautioned against viewing energy security in competitive terms among the Asian powers, and against efforts to dominate the region economically. Instead, he called for benevolent leadership by Japan as a co-leader with others in developing Asia.
